Wheaton's History and What It Means for Your Attic
Wheaton was founded by brothers Warren and Jesse Wheaton and their neighbor Erastus Gary, who came west from Connecticut in the 1830s. In 1848 they gave the railroad free right-of-way through their land, and the depot was named Wheaton. The village incorporated in 1859, Warren donated land for the school that became Wheaton College, and in 1867 Wheaton won a close county-wide vote to become the DuPage County seat, a fight with Naperville that ended with a famous midnight raid on the old courthouse records.
Around the turn of the century, wealthy Chicago families built country estates here, the best known being Cantigny, the former home of Tribune publisher Colonel Robert McCormick. Stately homes went up near downtown and on the Northside, followed by waves of post-war Capes and ranches and larger subdivisions in the decades after. The result is a city where a 120-year-old Victorian can sit a few minutes from a 1990s two-story. Our attic insulation services in Wheaton are built to handle both, starting with an honest look at your attic.

What We Find in Wheaton Attics
Historic Northside and Downtown Homes
Victorians, foursquares, and bungalows from the late 1800s through the 1930s were built with little or no insulation. Their framing often lets air move from the basement to the attic through the walls, and some still have knob-and-tube wiring that needs to be checked first.
Post-War Capes and Ranches
Homes from the 1940s through the 1960s usually have insulation that has settled to a fraction of its original depth. Cape Cods add knee walls and small attic spaces behind the upstairs bedrooms that were rarely insulated well.
1970s to 1990s Subdivisions
Larger homes on the south and west sides of the city were insulated to older code levels, and after 30 to 50 years that insulation has compressed. Unsealed recessed lights, attic hatches, and duct connections are common finds.

End-to-end Restoration
Complete Attic Insulation Services for Wheaton Homes
Whether you own a Victorian on the Northside or a newer home near Danada, we build the plan around what your attic actually needs. The Attic Genius is part of The Clean Genius family of home service companies, and our own trained crews handle every part of the job, so there's no hand-off to subcontractors and no guessing who's in your home.
Attic Insulation Installation
Most homes we inspect need more insulation than they have. We add blown-in cellulose, blown-in fiberglass, or batts to bring your attic up to current recommended levels, and every job includes a written warranty.
Old Insulation Removal
Some insulation isn't worth saving. When it's wet, moldy, or full of animal waste, we remove it with HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment that keeps the mess in the attic and out of your living space.
Air Sealing
Air sealing is like closing the windows before you turn on the heat. We plug the hidden openings around fixtures, pipes, ducts, and access panels so warm and cool air stay where you want them.
Attic Ventilation
Without good airflow, attics trap heat in summer and moisture in winter. We make sure your soffit vents, ridge vents, and attic fans move air the way they should.
Pest and Vermin Cleanup
Rodents, squirrels, and raccoons can ruin insulation in a single season. We take out the damaged material, disinfect the attic, and replace it with clean, new insulation.
Moisture and Mold Remediation
Mold problems are handled by our sister company, The Mold Genius. Once the cleanup is done and the moisture source is fixed, we come back and restore your insulation.
Harsh Climate Realities
How Wheaton Winters and Summers Test Your Attic
Winter Stress Test
Sub-Zero Freezes & Ice Dam Formation
Wheaton winters are tough on older homes. Victorians and bungalows often have finished upper floors with only a thin layer of insulation between the heated rooms and the roof. Heat escapes, melts the snow from underneath, and the water refreezes at the eaves and around dormers as ice dams. Older homes with open wall cavities also pull cold air up from below, creating drafts that make the whole house harder to heat.
Summer Heat Load
130°F Radiative Heat & Duct Losses
Summer brings the opposite problem. Upstairs rooms in Capes and bungalows sit right under the roof, and when the attic climbs past 130 degrees on a hot day, those rooms heat up fast. Newer homes on the south side deal with it too, especially when ductwork runs through a hot attic. Proper insulation, air sealing, and ventilation make a Wheaton home more comfortable all year long.

How much attic insulation does a Wheaton home need?
Wheaton is in climate zone 5, where current recommendations call for attic insulation rated R-49 to R-60, or roughly 16 inches or more of blown-in material. Most post-war homes we inspect in Wheaton have R-19 or less, and many of the historic homes on the Northside have almost none.
How much do attic insulation services in Wheaton cost?
Most Wheaton attic insulation projects cost between $2,000 and $6,000. The size of your attic drives most of the price, and since your attic roughly matches the footprint of your home's top floor, a spread-out ranch usually costs more than a two-story with similar living space. The rest depends on how much insulation you already have, whether old material has to be removed, and how much air sealing is needed. After your free inspection, you'll get a written quote with a firm price.
Pricing shown is a general estimate only and is not a quote. Your actual cost depends on your attic's square footage, condition, current insulation, and the work needed.
The upstairs of my Wheaton bungalow is always too hot or too cold. Why?
Bungalows and Capes have upstairs rooms tucked right under the roof, with knee walls and small attic spaces on the sides. Those areas were rarely insulated or sealed well, so the rooms swing with the weather. Insulating and air sealing the knee walls, sloped ceilings, and attic floor behind them usually makes a big difference.
Should I air seal before adding insulation?
Yes. Insulation slows heat from moving through the attic floor, but it doesn't stop air from leaking through gaps around lights, pipes, and hatches. Sealing those leaks first lets the new insulation do its job and keeps moist indoor air out of the attic.
How disruptive is an attic insulation job?
Not very. Almost all of the work happens in the attic, and we protect your floors and walkways with drop cloths and keep dust contained with HEPA equipment. Most jobs are finished in a single day, and you can usually stay home while we work.
